Joe Brainard. [Duchess of Alba]. N.p., n.d. Original collage, 3 1/2 x 9 1/4 in., constructed from three postcards of a painting by Francisco Goya that present progressively closer views of the Duchess of Alba’s hand. The postcards are attached with clear adhesive tape. On verso is an approx. one hundred-word signed letter to Bobbie Creeley. This work was likely created in the early-to-mid 1970s. Joe Brainard wrote in 1965, “The room after room of Goyas at the Prado are not to be forgotten. Goya was never Goya before. He is now by new favorite painter.” (Padgett, Joe, p. 88.) Brainard became close to the Creeleys in 1971 in Bolinas. On www.granarybooks.com
